Meet Me In The Basement

One of the most common collages appear in elementary school classrooms. Paste on the page every picture you can find relating to a theme/idea. In high school this graduates into drug themes, or war and carnage etc. The images themselves have no direct relationship to the images around them but exist on their own terms. One of the first pictures I found like this was H. Bosch’s ‘Hell’. Of course this is created by a great artist but the premise is the same. These are the kind of collages that I have avoided. They are in the hands of ordinary mortals… boring. But they are used by many especially with a political agenda. One such group is The Broken Social Scene and their song Meet Me In The Basement. This song attempts to unify the social ills of the planet and the meeting of the G20 in Toronto.

  1. Hey David,
Nice Post. Your thoughts are provocative indeed. I have always like surrealism and collage, therefore I am drawn to this images. I am not familiar with the band and the song, but will check them out.
