Wanted his friends to buy him a hooker.

August 2, 2011

I quite often grab a coffee at Starbucks. Take a seat. Read my newspaper. And listen. Obama was being crucified. For the debt crisis. Republicans were… someone’s daughter is sending provocative pictures of herself over her phone. To her boyfriend. I read.

And thought about John. Sometimes Johnny. Which infuriated him. John looked like a Republican. Controlled. Short cropped hair. Not too tall. Good looking. Nice teeth. In front.

When he turned 21 he was upset. Wanted his friends to buy him a hooker. They bought him… a case of Canadian. 6 pack. John wasn’t a close friend. More a close friend of a close friend. He was smart. Top 3 in high school. Graduated from college with a history major. Became a civil servant. The next thing I heard. He had a brain tumor.

We all thought he had died. That was over 30 years ago. Met him again at a party. Unexpectedly. Five years ago. Hardly recognized him. ‘Hey, Johnny,’ I said. ‘You’re bald.’
