That’s what lets the light in

August 12, 2011

It is very late. I’ve been surfing through the net. Checking out artists. Music. I listened to about a dozen versions of The House of the Rising Sun. Of course the Animal’s version is the best. Then there’s Woody Guthrie’s version. And Leadbelly. And Dolly Parton. Bob Dylan. And they are all great. But Sinead O’Connor’s version is really interesting. Her voice is haunting.

Looking at a lot of work that is so professionally done. So technically well done that one is seduced by its brilliance. But sometimes that luster is an illusion. When I used to do straight cut and paste for my work, people could not figure out how I did it. It was flattering. But it didn’t make the work better. Technology does not make art. Let your flaws show. As Leonard Cohen said about the crack in everything. ‘That’s what lets the light in.’
