I apologize

May 6, 2012

“There is no moral issue. It is wrong — deadly wrong — to deny any of your fellow Americans the right to vote in this country. There is no issue of States rights or national rights. There is only the struggle for human rights. I have not the slightest doubt what will be your answer.” LBJ

Like so many of my generation I was caught up in the Vietnam War. I believe it was an evil war. And America was on the wrong side of that line. But there were men and women who believed that the war was right, and they were not evil. Lyndon Baines Johnson was one of these people. He left office almost shredded by the hatred in America for that war. And yet it was LBJ who passed the Civil Rights Legislation. He started the war on poverty. He was a giant.

  1. Even if he did pull that beagle up by the ears.
Vietnam? Common feeling at the time: If you’re going to send troops somewhere and fight – and die, it better be declared a war…not a “police action.” Gut it up and say what it is or stop it.
